One of my favorite things about living in the South is the arrival of a 'snow day'. Some winters we have several, some winters we don't get any, but they are always a treat--especially for the kids.
Last Thursday the weather was predicted to get ugly--freezing rain and possibly some snow. The storm was supposed to come through early in the afternoon, so by mid morning all the schools were announcing early closures. Unfortunately, the worst of the weather hit earlier than expected, making the roads a slippery mess right when all the kids were coming home.
Bryce came off the bus and ran home while snow blew all over the place. He was having so much fun sliding on the icy sidewalk and ran in all wet and excited telling me that it "wasn't even cold outside" and that he was going to go out and play. He ran upstairs, changed his wet pants and shoes for shorts and crocs and was almost out the door before I caught him and forced him back into long pants, socks, and a jacket. (And this is the kid who wore a sweatshirt all summer long!)
Bryce and his friends had a great time playing out in the "blizzard" and made a giant snowball in the front yard. It was about 3 feet tall Thursday afternoon and, since there hadn't been that much accumulation, it was a little grassy from being rolled around the yard. As the week went on and the weather warmed up, Bryce's giant snow ball began to melt, but the grass didn't fall off. It just kind of compacted. After a day or two, the snowball was about half it's original size, and almost completely covered with grass. By Monday, it was still hanging on, but looked more like a mini-haystack than a snowball. All in all, the giant snow ball lasted an entire week. I wonder if all the grass acted as insulation?
