Snow Day

Score one for the groundhog.  Two weeks ago, Punxsutauney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter and boy, was he right.  It has been COLD this year, but despite the frigid temperatures, we hadn't seen any snow.  We almost felt a little cheated a few weeks ago when Atlanta and Birmingham were shut down by their "blizzards" and all we got was rain.  All that changed this week though.

Monday night the forecast called for a few flakes and schools were delayed.  When we actually got about an inch of accumulation overnight, school was cancelled and we all enjoyed our unexpected day off.  While most of the snow melted during the day on Tuesday, the forecast was calling for freezing rain overnight and the possibility of more snow on Wednesday so school was cancelled for another day.  Most of Wednesday was a big disappointment though as all we got was a steady cold rain.  (not that the kids minded being off for nothing) Then, at about 5pm the rain finally turned into a steady snow shower.

I didn't think it would stick, since it had been so wet, but by  9pm we had a good 3 inches outside and it was still coming down.  Well, we couldn't let all that snow go to waste, after all, in the South you never know how long its going to last, so we donned boots and gloves over our pjs and went out and played in the snow.  We had a massive snowball fight and then built our own Olaf who, if I do say so myself, looked remarkably like his famous namesake.  

School has been cancelled again for today but the sun is out and the snow is melting.  I don't think the white will last too much longer (Olaf is already looking pretty sad in the yard) and I doubt that we will get another day off.  Lucky for us, tomorrow was scheduled as a teacher work day and the students get half the day off anyway.  What a busy week we've had with our one and a half days of school.  I can tell you this though, next week is going to seem extremely long!
