Austria--day 3

Today we explored downtown Graz. We started off with a visit to the Landeszeughaus (Armory) where we saw lots and lots of armor, guns, cannon, and Natalie's favorite, battle axes. We were even allowed to try some out. I don't know how anyone could have moved, let alone fought, wearing all that gear! Just another reason I am glad not to live in the middle ages!


Next we visited the Schlossberg, a castle fortress on a hill overlooking the city. There are two ways up--endless flights of stairs or a tram. Grandpa asked the girls which way they would rather go, and not being fools, they said they wanted to take the tram.

Grandpa complained most of the way up about never having paid to take the tram when you could walk up for free, but I think he was secretly relieved.

Once on top, we saw the Uhrturm (clock tower), and for the first time ever, we actually got to go inside and see the clockworks. Grandma was pretty excited about that since she had never heard of visitors being allowed to do that before.

We had fun taking some beautiful pictures of the city and walking through the gardens.
On the way down, we walked so that we could go through some of the tunnels at the bottom which were used as air-raid shelters during WWII.
